Common Sense: Part 4

of the present ability of america, with some miscellaneous reflexions

The preceding post deals with America's willingness to embark upon the Revolution for Independence. This part covers America's ability to endure the conflict.
"It is not in number, but in unity, that our great strength lies."
Paine notes two abilities that America affords to withstand the Revolution. One is the ability of America to pay for the war effort, the other is Americas natural and human resources.

Paine says, "no nation ought to be without debt." We find this isn't our trouble at all. We've incurred debt at a rate we can not in reality ever pay off. As far as utilizing our natural resources, due to restrictions imposed by government, we have not tapped but a small portion of all this country's material source of wealth. As for human resources, the welfare state has well decimated these poor slaves of government promises.

As Paine would say, we established this country "at the right end." Our constitution was formed first then men were delegated to execute and uphold it after.

With great foresight, Paine wanted an official declaration of separation from Britain. However, today we are slowly suffering under another form of tyranny from which it would be beneficial to declare independence. What is the tyranny you may ask? I'll wait for your answer...
