Common Sense: Part 3

Thoughts on the present state of American affairs

All Argument is over at the time Paine writes this pamphlet and the conflict will now be decided on the battlefield.
"Now is the seed time of continental union, faith and honor."
Up to this point, Britain has involved America in several conflicts and the appeals of the people of America regarding oppressive laws and taxes had been constantly ignored and undermined. Let me draw a few parallels between the continuous infighting between political parties in our time to Britain's involvement in wars with other countries and the Indians. Because of Britain's actions, America continues to suffer. From Britain's perspective this is intentional, as America is dependent upon their military and financial support. America, by its dependence and connection to Britain is handicapped in resolving and mending relations with neighboring nations and more importantly in creating relationships between the colonies themselves. It's the dependence upon another presumed authority that is the similarity to our political parties. These parties who have convinced us that they represent a certain ideology and if we vote for them they will in turn represent us based on our trust. All the while they disenfranchise and pine the electorate against each other creating a divide that appears to have no source of reconciliation. However, our situation can be easily resolved without resorting to military conflict. Our forefathers already shed their blood in the American Revolution and the consequences allowed us to set up a system that gives us the power and not as it may appear the political parties.

If only we could exercise that power. Are you waking up?

Another parallel is our appeals to our representatives to amend the crises we feel is imminent. We have made the calls, sent the letters, signed the petitions. Our hands are tired and our throats are sore. Yet we know our message is not reaching Washington or our State Houses. Our representatives are out of touch and their media sympathizers ignore us or worse misreport where we stand. This only aggravates us more as we see our efforts are not only ignored but are also undermined.

This chapter of the pamphlet considers the willingness of America's effort to unshackle itself from an insatiable oppressor. Paine says, "it is the true interest of this continent to be [Independent]" and "every thing short of that is mere patchwork." This is where we find ourselves now, though. We are waking up to see that it is mere patchwork covering our Independence. Our leaders have slowly drilled holes in our Liberties and patched it with pieces of socialism and Statist ideals.

Some questions to consider:
What is meant that reconciliation with Britain and ruin are nearly related? And what are the terms of reconciliation?
Where is the King of America? What/Who is the One true authority?
